The subject of the painting is not particularly intricate – beneath an uneven layer of paint, a drawing of a hand can be discerned, and across it, from edge to edge, runs an irregular black line. What is it? It is the life line.
Those familiar with palmistry will notice that this line appears to lie more or less in its proper place – between the thumb and the index finger. Some may see the hand’s attempt to grasp that thread of life, which perhaps reflects a person’s unconscious desire to remain alive – to cling, even in the most difficult moments, to possibilities that offer a chance of survival.
Whatever the lines of a human life may promise, what has a beginning will also have an end, and those who are born will fade like this hand in the painting, while life itself continues forever. Like this line.
